I feel like a murderer! I try to keep the birdbath full of water, and think this is even more important than birdseed in the feeder. But today when I went out to water some flowers, I came upon a terrible scene--a beautiful mourning dove was on her back with feet in the air in the DRY birdbath. What a message she sent to me! She could have died somewhere else, but by doing it in my birdbath she made me promise to be more caring in this 100+ degree heat.

Oh, he guilt! I understand why you priorities had to shift a little after that find. The only problem in this heat is it dries up so fast, you have to fill it constantly. Good luck with that. Maybe you need a bigger bowl.

When we take the puppies out we fill the birdbath and bowls of water for the outside critters as a habit. I'm sorry that happened to you.
Oh, dear! That must have ben so upsetting to find. I'm sure it dries up very quickly in that heat.

Oh what a sad sight! My favorite bird is the mourning dove! Here in NE Ohio we only have temps in the low 90's but your picture is enough to remind me to FILL those bird feeders and bird baths every day!
I was wondering if putting ice cubes in the water might not delay the evaportion for a while?
Sometimes Mother Nature needs to give us a good kick to remind us to be nice to her children. By your posting this picture I am sure that you have kick started many people who ordinarlly might not even bother to fill the bird bath. It is of course painful but you have helped many other birds and critters who will now survive this horrible slummer.

A few minutes after I filled the birdbath there was a lizard drinking, then a red-headed woodpecker on one side and a brown thrasher on the opposite side. As soon as they left, a pair of doves took a bath!
Oh dear. Our birdbath is drying up so fast it's a full time job keeping water in it. Plus the birds are eating so much we are filling up 4 feeders every oyher day. But they are worth the trouble. Love my birds and squirrels too.
